Lunch at Art Deco Cafe Americain at Leidseplein, Amsterdam

The Leidse plein is one of the most well-known squares in Amsterdam. It’s very popular with tourists and almost everyone visiting Amsterdam will end up at the Leidseplein at some point. Most restaurants near the Leidseplein aren’t very good, they cater to tourists who want a cheap pizza or burger. Luckily there’s an exception. An exception that’s been around since the nineteen fifties: Cafe Americain. Cafe Americain is an iconic restaurant at the Leidesplein, everyone in Amsterdam knows Cafe Americain and the fountain in front of it. Cafe Americain is the restaurant in the American Hotel, but you can also visit the restaurant if you aren’t staying in the hotel.

If you’re looking for a place to have breakfast, lunch or dinner I absolutely recommend Cafe Americain. You can enjoy delicious food in a beautiful interior here. The restaurant is completely in Art Deco style. It has been renovated recently but they kept the original art deco decor and transformed it to a modern version in the same style.
Cafe Americain is open for breakfast, lunch, high tea, drinks and dinner. On the menu you’ll find all the classic dishes and some great modern variations. For the vegetarians I recommend the avocado toast with creme fraiche and poached egg for lunch and the mushroom spinach quiche for dinner.

Cafe Americain works together with artisan brands to offer the best quality at their restaurant. They have bread from Vlaamsch Broodhuys for example and cakes from Patisserie Holtkamp, the famous bakery from Amsterdam. Pictured you see two of the cakes from Patisserie Holtkamp that they serve at Cafe Americain; the raspberry cake and banoffee pie.
They make a perfect dessert for your lunch or can accompany your afternoon coffee.
