4th of July recipes

Are you celebrating the 4th of July this year? This American independence day is always a great party. I loved it when I lived in New York and I could watch the fireworks from the East River. But no matter where you live, you can throw your own 4th of July party with these red, white and blue food ideas. They’re also great for the Dutch King’s Day and the French 14th of July of course!

I made the cupcakes pictured at the top of this page with a gluten free cake mix with natural coloring from Madame Loulou. If you top it with whipped cream and blueberries you’ve got the perfect (gluten free) 4th of July cupcakes!

4th of July Sandwich

To start your day well, you should have a good breakfast. And what fits better on the breakfast table than a red, white and blue sandwich? This sandwich is vegan, doesn’t contain any added sugars and it provides you with energy and vitamins!
I used strawberries, bananas and blueberries to create the layers.

This fruit snack is great to pack and take with you since you can already make it the day before. Simply drop a strawberry in melted white chocolate until 2/3 is covered and then dip it in blue sprinkles for 1/3. Store in the fridge.
Together with Foodie Channel I made a nice food video on how to make these red, white and blue strawberries, you can see it here.

4th of July Chocolate

I have to admit that this snack isn’t healthy. But after celebrating the whole day you can fix your sweet tooth with this 4th of July chocolate! I melted 2 bars of white chocolate, poured it onto parchment paper and added some drops of melted red and blue chocolate. You can make it yourself by adding oil based food coloring to white chocolate but it might be easier to buy colored chocolate flakes (I bought mine in a cooking shop). Use a knife to create a swirl and decorate the chocolate with blue and red m&m’s. Set to cool in the freezer for at least one hour. Break it in chunks to make sure that everyone can have a piece.

This red, white and blue dessert is a great way to end your meal on the 4th of July. It’s gluten free, sugar free and optionally vegan. And super easy to make, it only takes 3 ingredients and 1 minute of your time. Put two tablespoons of blueberries at the bottom of the glass, cover with two tablespoons of quark, greek yogurt or plant based yogurt and end with a layer of raspberries.

4th of July peek-a-boo cupcakes
Have you ever heard of peek-a-boo cupcakes or peek-a-boo cakes? Peek-a-boo cakes or cupcakes are (cup)cakes with a surprise inside. These cupcakes might look like regular decorated cupcakes but there’s a surprise waiting inside when you start eating them.
You’ll notice as soon as you take a bite or when your fork’s cutting of a piece. These cupcakes have red, white and blue sprinkles inside!
