Turkish restaurant Ali Ocakbasi in Amsterdam

When you only think of kebab when you think of Turkish food, you’re missing out! Restaurant Ali Ocakbasi proves my point. This Turkish restaurant offers delicious food from the Anatolian region in Turkey.
They have restaurants in Istanbul, London and Amsterdam. I just went to their Amsterdam restaurant and I loved it!

The waiter came to our table with a big platter full of starters. He explained what everything was and advised us to pick three of the dishes. Although it’s tempting to pick more since they all look super tasty, it’s smart to leave some room for a  main dish. Almost all the starters are vegetarian and they also have several vegan and gluten free options.
We went for the Muhammara (a spicy paste with crushed walnuts), the Abagannus (puree of roasted eggplants) and the Köpuğlu (fried vegetables in tomato sauce).

Although the starters are mainly vegetarian, the main dishes mostly contain meat. Luckily they also have options for the vegetarians like myself. They have two vegetarian pides and a delicious grilled eggplant dish. I went for the latter. It was a tasty stuffed eggplant with pepper, tomato, onion, spices and cheese. All the main dishes at Ali Ocakbasi are served with bulgur and salad.

We shared a dessert since the desserts in the Turkish cuisine can be quite heavy. We went for the Peynirli Irmik Tatlisi. A difficult word but it’s a dessert made with semolina and cheese, served warm with pistachios and ice cream.

Do you have a food allergy or dietary wishes? With every item on the menu they state whether it contains eggs, dairy, nuts, gluten, etcetera
