Restaurant Spingaren in Amsterdam

In 2017 restaurant Spingaren opened its doors in a beautiful canal house in Amsterdam. It’s housed on the Herengracht, where restaurant Lieve used to be. Spingaren started with making their own charcuterie (meat products) and opened up their own restaurant in September 2017. As they started with making their own meat, I thought the restaurant wouldn’t be suitable for vegetarians like myself. But I found out that they don’t only make meat, they also make their own fermented vegetables!
I heard that on the menu of restaurant Spingaren you can also find really good vegetarian options. This made me curious and, as always, I love to try out new restaurants so I went to Spingaren to try it out!

For the starters restaurant Spingaren serves sharing boards with either meat, fish, vegetarian or a combination. You can choose your own small dishes for the starters. 2 starters per person should do, wo we choose 4 vegetarian bites. We went for avocado with mint and lime, labne with olive oil, chickpea beignets and vegetarian chorizo.

For the mains Spingaren has 3 meat dishes, 3 fish dishes and 3 vegetarian dishes. The vegetarian options are tempeh cookies with bean salad, red curry with parsnip and the one I had: Sticky Cauliflower served with spinach, quinoa and cauliflower cream. I love it when a chef can serve a creative vegetarian meal. not the standard goat cheese salad or pasta pesto. I never had a dish like this before and I’ve been a vegetarian for a very long time! The Sticky Cauliflower alone is already worth a trip to restaurant Spingaren!

There’s always room for dessert! At Restaurant Spingaren you can go for a variety of cheeses or for one of the 4 sweet desserts. They have a chocolate ganache cake, grilled pineapple and creme brulee from the Dutch candy ‘hopjes’ that tastes like coffee and caramel. But I went for my favorite: cheesecake with white chocolate and a chocolate crust.
