Stayokay Utrecht: Hostel 2.0

The Stayokay in the city centre of Utrecht is officially a hostel, but I’d like to think of it as a ‘Hostel 2.0’ as it’s very different from the average hostel.
Stayokay Utrecht Centrum is very comfortable, clean and modern. They also have many private rooms, so you don’t have to sleep in a dorm if you’re staying there with your partner.
Being this crossover of a hostel and a hotel, Stayokay Utrecht is the perfect place to stay for a comfortable trip on a budget.

The Stayokay Utrecht Centrum is located on the Neude, right in the city centre. It’s within walking distance from the Central Station and right next to bars, restaurants and the shopping streets.
Besides a hostel, it also houses a restaurant called the 5th and there are several rooms that you can hire for a business meeting or workshop. As Utrecht is the most centrally located city of the Netherlands, the Stayokay is the perfect spot when you’re meeting up with people from all over the country.

Stayokay Utrecht Centrum is a hostel, so they’ve got dorms for either 4 people, 6-9 people or more than 8 people. But they also have several private rooms (for 2, 4 or 6 people), a comfort room and two theme rooms.
The theme rooms are wonderful if you’re staying with kids. There’s a Railway Museum room an a Nijntje (Miffy) room.

We stayed at the 2 people comfort room. This room feels more like a hotel room than a hostel room. It has a double bed and you have your own bathroom. Sheets, towels and shampoo are included, something that’s definitely not standard in a hostel!

Stayokay Utrecht is a quiet hostel. But when you’re young and/or traveling alone, you might want a bit more action. If you’re looking for a hostel that organizes more activities and that doesn’t get quiet at 10pm, you can browse on Party Hostel Guru for your next trip.

The lobby of Stayokay Utrecht is located on the 1st floor where you’ll also find the bar, restaurant the 5th and work-spots where you can plug in your laptop and get some work done. Trust me, when you’re working with upside down Nijntjes (Miffy’s) in front of you, you’ll be working with a smile on your face.

Restaurant The 5th is also open for non-hotel guests. You can enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner here. Coffee addicts can buy a mug for 7,50 and enjoy unlimited refills (perfect when you’re trying to make a deadline). They also have delicious snacks like these nachos that need a warning of how big the portion size is.
Every evening they’re organizing something like cocktail night or a dj. Don’t worry if you’re afraid of loud noise: the activities always stop before midnight.

Whether you’re a hostel guest or not; you can always enjoy dinner at restaurant The 5th. They have many vegetarian and vegan options on their menu like a vegan curry or a vegan stew. They even have vegan bitterballen! Pictured above is their vegan burger made from portobello mushrooms.

For only 7,- you can book a breakfast with your stay at Stayokay Utrecht Centrum. The Miffy and Railway museum rooms already have breakfast included. The breakfast buffet is quite different than the regular hostel breakfast like I know if from my backpacking trip in Australia where you’d only get white toast with jam. At Stayokay Utrecht you can get all kinds of nice bread, cereals and fruit.
